Folder Player: Limitations of Google Play

Back to Home

For many years Google’s motto was "Don't be Evil". That phrase quietly disappeared in 2018. What happened afterward may not be entirely surprising.
Over time, Google has introduced increasingly restrictive policies for apps that it considers a potential threat to its own ecosystem. Unfortunately, Folder Player, as an independent app developed outside Google’s own product lineup, has become an example of how these policies affect smaller developers.

Specifically, Folder Player has faced the following restrictions:
  • Direct access to the file system is not allowed (more about this here), forcing the app to rely on Google’s slow and broken "media search". The formal explanation given was - “Your app is not a file manager.”
  • Playback of MP4 files is not permitted, with the justification that “not your app’s core function.”
Tons of appeals resulted in zero effect. Google effectively ignores arguments and sends back templated responses. Their appeals process is a sham, an immitation, pretending to be a developer complaint resolution channel.

My only explanation is that this app is another victim of corporate greed, which suppresses 3rd party apps in favor of native Google apps such as "Google Music".
Unfortunately, we are all hostages of this monopoly of corporate greed, and we can't do anything. However, I will try to do my best to support alternative app stores, such as Amazon. Let me know if you're using other app stores where Folder Player's presence would be beneficial for the community.

P.S.

Should we all drop Google ecosystem and switch to iOS? The answer is : Apple is lot worse. Thats the only good thing I can tell about Google right now.

P.P.S.

MP4 playback is allowed in the Free version though. You may ask this question : WHY!?!?
I don't know. PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY ARE [pick your favorite word] ! Now you see who I am dealing with ?
